bruised polys?
I am currently working on a polygonal model in maya, when i go to use simple tools such as "extrude face"on a simple clean 4 sided poly, I will often end up with dark and light bruises around the extrusion on the model depending on which way I extrude it (in/out). They show up in the render too. Does anyone know what it is that i am talking about? If so does anyone have an idea of how to fix/prevent it from happening?

try playing with Edit polygons>normals>soften/harden, if the surface has the setting soft very high it will do that.

Edit Polygons-> Normals -> soften/harden
and put in the options 0
(or click All Hard)
that will do it.
or add more edges.. (loops)

Yes, making the normals harder can fix that, but often at the expense of smoothness, of the model(duh), which can look bad, so I would go with oliver and recommend that you add more edges. The faces will still be bruised, but the damage will be minimized.
